About us

Who are we?

We are a Nursery located within Baker Barracks Thorney Island.

Thorney Island Nursery opened in January 2004 having previously operated as a crèche since 1987. The nursery is committee run and mainly serves army personnel and the local community.

We provide term time childcare for children aged 9 months to 5 years. Our nursery operates across two dedicated buildings.

The Baby room is designed for children aged 9 months to 2 years 6 months, this space features a self-contained, astro-turfed garden, ensuring a safe and engaging environment for our youngest attendees.

The Pre-school building caters for children aged from 2 years 6 months up to school age. This larger facility includes a spacious main room, a smaller room for focused activities, a snack room and a generous outdoor garden for various activities.

All our meals are freshly prepared on site by our dedicated cook and we have a diverse menu that accommodates various cultural preferences and dietary requirements, ensuring every child enjoys nutritious and satisfying meals.

We maintain a close relationship with Thorney Island Community Primary School by offering breakfast and after-school club services. Our staff accompany children to and from school providing seamless care throughout the day.

Our curriculum and the EYFS

At Thorney Island nursery it is our intention to make our setting accessible to children and families from all sections of the local community. We actively promote inclusion, equality of opportunity, the valuing of diversity and British values. We strive to ensure that every child has the same opportunities, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or beliefs. We promote children's right to be strong, resilient and listened to by creating an environment in our setting that encourages children to develop a positive self image.

Our curriculum is based around the children, their individual needs, interests and what they already know (cultural capital). We use this knowledge to plan activities which will provide new opportunities and experiences to challenge and expand their knowledge, understanding and skills.

We do this by providing resources that are open ended and will spark the children’s imagination, allowing them to consider why, what and how? Give them the tools to be able to experiment with and build on their knowledge and take risks through their play.

Be doing this the children will become independent, strong individuals and will be ready for the next stage in their life.
